On June 14, 2024, at 7:30 AM, the Sarnia Police Emergency Response Team (ERT) and SPS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) executed two search warrants in central Sarnia, stemming from a theft complaint filed by a local retailer. The Community Crime Unit (CCU) initially identified two suspects involved in high-value retail thefts, leading to the CID taking over the investigation and securing search warrants for two locations to recover stolen property and other evidence.

The search warrants were executed on Elgin Street and Durand Street. As a result, David Thompson, 50, of Sarnia, has been charged with two counts of theft under $5000. He was arrested and released with a pending court date. David Larocque, 40, of Sarnia, faces three counts of theft under $5000 and is currently wanted by the SPS. Authorities urge anyone with information on Larocque’s whereabouts to contact the Sarnia Police Service at 519-344-8861 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 519-332-TIPS (8477) or online at https://www.p3tips.com/.

During the search on Durand Street, officers discovered Jon-Ross Walters, who was on release for drug trafficking offences in Niagara with strict bail conditions. Walters attempted to deceive the police by providing a false name but was quickly identified. He was found with a loaded Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun, $15,120 in cash, 4 grams of fentanyl, 23 grams of methamphetamine, and 4 grams of cocaine.

Jon-Ross Walters, 27, faces multiple charges, including five counts of breach of release order, possession for the purpose of trafficking-cocaine, possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm, and several other firearm-related offenses. He was held for bail.

SPS Chief Derek Davis commented on the operation, stating, “Criminal activity not only transcends municipal boundaries, but also crime categories. Our Community Crime Unit (CCU) students were investigating a shoplifting case that evolved into search warrants, resulting in the seizure of drugs, cash, and another illegal firearm. This case highlights how minor crimes are increasingly connected with serious criminal activities within our community.
