SARNIA, ONTARIO — The Sarnia Open Chess Tournament, held on July 21, 2024, at the Sarnia Francophone School, was a resounding success. The event brought together chess enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels for a day filled with strategic gameplay, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.
The tournament was organized by dedicated chess enthusiasts Andy Bruziewicz, Mike Cassidy and Malathy Krishnamoorthy, with support from Muru Sundararajan on behalf of Hello Asia News, an online newspaper. It provided an inclusive and enjoyable chess experience. Participants competed in two distinct groups: individuals under 18 years old and adults, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to showcase their skills.
“We are thrilled with the turnout and the level of competition we witnessed today,” remarked Andy Bruziewicz. “The Sarnia Open Chess Tournament has always been about fostering a love for the game and encouraging fair play, and today was a testament to that.”
The format included five rounds of play, with each game adhering to a maximum time control of 15 minutes per side unless concluded earlier by checkmate. This structure ensured that players had ample opportunity to display their tactical prowess and strategic thinking.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of trophies to the top three performers in each group. In addition to celebrating competitive success, the tournament also honored participants with the prestigious Brilliancy Award, recognizing outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary conduct. Additionally, the kids were thrilled to receive certificates of participation, adding to their sense of accomplishment and joy.
“We believe in rewarding not only the winners but also those who embody good sportsmanship and chess etiquette,” said Muru Sundararajan. “It’s important to promote positive behaviors and values among our participants, and today we saw many examples of that.”
The event was sponsored by Hello Asia News, whose support was instrumental in its success. “We are quite happy to be part of this game and to support such a wonderful community event,” noted the organizers.
Participants and attendees expressed their satisfaction with the event, praising the organization and the friendly, competitive atmosphere. “It was a fantastic experience,” said participants Suresh Nagarajan and Anurag Shrivatsava. “The organizers did an excellent job, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s tournament.”
