In picture left to right: Dharmendra Prathan, Union Minister for Education, M.K Stalin, Chief Minister, Tamilnadu

Compelling the three-language policy on Tamil Nadu, which has long followed a two-language policy (Tamil and English), is a blatant attack on federalism and an undemocratic overreach by the Union government. Tamil Nadu has repeatedly rejected Hindi imposition, and the state’s Chief Minister is absolutely right in asserting that this move violates constitutional principles.

“They have to come to the terms of the Indian Constitution,” says Dharmendra Prathan, the Union Education Minister. He calls the three-language policy the “rule of law.”

But can the Education Minister specify which section of the Indian Constitution mandates the three-language policy? The reality is, there is no constitutional provision that forces any state to adopt three languages. The Union government is twisting the law to push its political agenda.

India is a Union of States! Education falls under the Concurrent List! The Union government is not an authoritarian master over it! The Constitution gives states the right to decide their language policies, and Tamil Nadu has successfully implemented a two-language system (Tamil and English) for decades without any issues. Why should the Union government interfere?

This linguistic imposition is nothing but a form of blackmail. Tamilians will not tolerate the arrogance of threatening Tamil Nadu by saying, “No funds until the three-language policy is accepted!” This is a direct assault on state rights and an insult to the people of Tamil Nadu.

We are only demanding our rightful autonomy—not begging for favors! If the Union government arrogantly behaves as if we are asking for their private property, then Delhi will have to face the distinct spirit of the Tamils!

Let it be clear: Any attempt to erode Tamil Nadu’s linguistic identity will be met with strong resistance. The people of Tamil Nadu have fought against Hindi imposition in the past, and we will continue to defend our rights against such undemocratic policies. Language is not just about communication; it is about culture, identity, and self-respect. The Union government must stop its coercive tactics and respect the federal structure of India!
