The annual Phil Willard Memorial Chess Tournament brought together young chess enthusiasts from across the region on Saturday, March 7, at Port Huron High School, drawing a record-breaking 153 student participants from grades 1 through 12. Organized by the Port Huron Chess Club and supported by school staff and community volunteers, the event has grown into one of the most anticipated scholastic chess competitions in the area.

This year’s tournament saw the largest turnout in its history, with nearly double the number of participants compared to last year, reflecting the rising popularity of chess among students in neighboring school districts. The competition provided an opportunity for young players to test their strategic thinking, concentration, and sportsmanship in a friendly yet competitive environment.

Several students from the Port Huron Area School District (PHASD) stood out by securing first place in their respective grade divisions:

3rd Grade: Enzo K – Keewahdin Elementary

4th Grade: Esteban S – Keewahdin Elementary

5th Grade: Jonathan M – Michigamme Elementary

7th Grade: Braden H – Central Middle School

10th Grade: Christian K- Port Huron High School (no photo)

The tournament was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Port Huron High School staff, parents, and community supporters. Key contributors included Lonnie Rutkofske, Director of the Port Huron Chess Club, along with Alan Gregg, Bill Wingrove, and several dedicated volunteers who worked behind the scenes to ensure the event’s success.

Organizers said the remarkable increase in participation this year highlights the growing enthusiasm for chess among young students and the positive impact of community-driven educational activities.

With its record turnout and strong student engagement, the Phil Willard Memorial Chess Tournament continues to strengthen its reputation as a meaningful platform for nurturing young minds and celebrating the timeless game of chess.
